I've heard that you can copyright something easily (mostly just text stuff, though) by putting it in an envelope and mailing it to yourself. As long as it remains sealed, it's copyrighted as of the date it was post-marked.
Has anyone heard of this?

Yes that is my understanding also. I hope it works. I've done it with a song or two I've written...... Now where did I put that envelope?????

I wonder if notorizing would help your case any, but are you planning on getting sued or something ![]()

Well, I am worried about ideas getting stolen (I tend to talk too much, if I get on the right subject), but there probably isn't too much I have to worry about if I don't post them on an internet site. Then again, I worry excessively, so this would be good for piece of mind. Regardless, the notes I plan on submitting soon would serve a second purpose of archival. Good for posterity. ![]()
Hmm... probably ought to backup my computer files when I do that, so I know what's in that envelope.

thats what a cd-r is for, although they have been proven to not last as long as originally thought. So really we might not have a perfect archival method for data (magnetically charged particles lose energy over time

No, not that kind of archival. This is just for fun so that if I ever develop this project more, I can see where I was back in 2004. Not to mention protection against frivolous lawsuits (these days people sue over anything, as both of us are well aware). It's cheap anyway. Just the cost of the paper and stamps.
As for backup, I like the method I have now. One Zip Drive and two hard drives (within separate computers). The Zip Drive is an external one I bought from my brother, so I can use it on any computer that has the drivers. Oh joy! ![]()
