Kinda pointless, but...

Some random statistics on high value characters.  http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6290913/.  One thing that made me look twice is that Yu-gi-oh! earned twice as much total as Pokemon in all it's years.

Oh, and I'm not so sure how accurate this is.  Seemes to me there'd be a LOT of things that could've been left out.  Still, this is just for fun.  big_smile

Re: Kinda pointless, but...

I am not sure that I agree with their exclusion of hello kitty, she is based on a cartoon, I thought,  or maybe that came later, Mike, what do you know? Which came first, the kitty or the show?

Harry? Mickey? Frodo? Who knocked Winnie off his perch?

Winnie the Pooh topped Forbes' list of top-earning fictional characters last year, but was bumped to the No. 2 spot by Mickey Mouse in this year's list.

NEW YORK - The characters on this list may be make-believe, but the dollar signs are real. According to our calculations, the top-ten fictional characters grossed more than $25 billion in 2003.

Media giants like Disney and Viacom took home most of that revenue, but videogame makers, publishing companies, and toymakers such as Mattel and Hasbro cashed in, too.

Pure toys, like Hello Kitty, who would have ranked third on our list with earnings of $4 billion last year, were excluded from our list. That's because in order to qualify for our list, a property must have made their debut in a narrative story, be it a cartoon, a book or even a videogame. They must also be "fictional" ? not based on a real person. Click here for complete methodology.

2.    Winnie the Pooh & friends    $5.6 billion
3.    Frodo Baggins (Lord of the Rings)    $2.9 billion
4.    Harry Potter    $2.8 billion
5.    Nemo    $2 billion
6.    Yu-gi-oh    $1.6 billion
7.    Spongebob SquarePants    $1.5 billion
8.    Spider-Man    $1.3 billion
9.    Wolverine (X-Men)    $900 million
10.    Pok?mon    $825 million

Some notable characters didn't quite make the list, including The Simpsons and the Power Rangers. Without a box office hit to boost their earnings, a few of the characters that made the cut in 2002, like the ?Star Wars? gang and Sully from ?Monsters, Inc.,? fell off this time around.

Re: Kinda pointless, but...

Technically, Yu-gi-oh! started as a card game (from what I can guess), so if Hello Kitty does indeed have a cartoon its exclusion makes no sense... though my only guess is they could be basing this on US appearance of this material.  I don't know...  :?

BTW, Jer, I finally finished watching Princess Mononoke.  I think I'm dazed and confused (Spirited Away made more sense than this).  It's a strange mixture of intriguing and off-kilter.  Needless to say, it mixed strangely with the rest of the day.  Trying to sleep with random mixtures of scenes from that movie (the peaceful ones, for some reason), music from that movie, music from Deep Dive (I have been watching that too much), imaginations from my story project, and randomly cycling through names [pronunciations] in my head all added together to keep my mind, and therefore myself, awake for about an hour before sleep took me.  At least I wrote down a few more names that came to my head, so the day was still productive despite the excessive turning of the gears in my head.  big_smile
