We used the following script to introduce the new YW theme.  After the script, we made the candles.  The candle activity is detailed after the
script.  We all had a wonderful time and the girls really enjoyed making the candles.

Welcome Young Women (YW)

Song: Lighten Up! Written by Cheiko Okasaki (Sung to the tune of If You're Happy and you Know it Clap Your Hands)

Introduction of YW Theme
This year's YW theme is: The Lord is My Light. Our new theme is taken from 1 Nephi 17:13 and the full scripture reads, "And I will also be your light in the wilderness; and I will prepare the way before you, if it so be that ye shall keep my commandments; wherefore, inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall be led towards the promised land; and ye shall know that it is by me that ye are led."

We wanted to give you some background information about this scripture. Nephi and his family had been struggling in the wilderness for 8 years. They had been blessed and protected by the Lord, but Laman and Lemuel were doing a lot of murmuring.  In Chapter 17, the Lord asks Nephi to build a ship.  Keep in mind that he had no idea how to build a ship and that would be like the Lord asking us to build a car.  But rather than doubt the Lord, Nephi asked where he could get the tools and trusted that the Lord would show him how to build the ship.

The Book of Mormon student manual discusses Nephi's great faith in God. "Nephi's response to the Lord's command to build a ship is another remarkable insight into his faith.  Several of the great prophets felt overwhelmed by tasks the Lord assigned to them.  Moses felt inadequate in confronting Pharaoh and asked for someone to speak for him.  Enoch felt he was slow of speech and asked the Lord why he wanted him.  Nephi easily could have wondered how he could ever know how to build an oceangoing ship capable of carrying approximately two dozen people.  But his immediate response was simply: ‘Whiter shall I go that I may find ore to molten (tools)?' (1 Nephi 17:9).  Obviously Nephi's confidence did not come from any previous shipbuilding experience, for Laman and Lemuel's reaction shows how ridiculous the idea was to them.  Rather, Nephi's confidence stemmed from his faith in God, and he was shown how to build the ship.

As Nephi trusted in the Lord to direct him in the wilderness, we too can trust in the Lord to show us the path to take.  We would like to play a song by Amy Grant called Thy Word.  Listen carefully to how Jesus Christ is our guide.

Jesus Christ truly is the light of the World (D&C 11:28).  We would like to show you how we can let our lights shine.  Please join us outside.

3 girls tell how they can let their light shine.  As they are talking, they light a candle.

The candle holder is designed to remind us the Lord is our light.  We're going to go back inside, enjoy some refreshments and make the candle holders.

The candle activity was provided by Susan L. Albert as described at the Craft Exchange www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/3053/exchange/april/clipcan.html
We used clipart of doves and the words The Lord is My Light for our design. A simple design works best.
